What it is like
Villas, small resorts, seafood markets and a long-established expat community. It is quieter than Patong. Costs sit in the middle for Phuket because housing is mostly villas and low-rise rather than luxury beachfront.
Getting around
A scooter or car is close to essential. Taxis and ride-hailing apps work but add up on longer trips.
Weather
The southwest monsoon usually brings the wettest weather from mid-May to mid-October, with rough seas on west-facing beaches.

Visa notes for long stays
- Muay Thai camps that support DTV applications are common in Rawai and Chalong. Check the documents with your embassy before you pay. See /visa-rules/dtv.
- Your landlord or hotel must file a TM30 residence notification. Ask for a copy, because offices often want it for 90-day reports and extensions.
- 90-day reports can reportedly be filed online after your first in-person report. Keep a paper backup in case the system refers you to the office.
