Thai visa agent scams: red flags and how to check an agent or school

Using a Thai visa agent is legal. Using one that supplies fake bank statements, promises a guaranteed visa or sells a school place with no classes is not. In August 2026 immigration police raided a Bangkok agency over forged bank documents linked to more than 400 clients. Official Thai government sites end in .go.th.

Yes. Agents can fill in forms, book appointments, translate documents and go to immigration with you. Many do honest work and save people real time.

The crime is in the documents. Under Thai law, causing an official to record false information is an offence, and legal guides point to section 267 of the Penal Code. The risk is not only the agent's. If your file contains a forged bank letter, it is your visa that gets refused or cancelled, and you who may face a ban.

Rule of thumb: an agent can help you meet the rules. An agent cannot make you meet them.

What are the most common Thai visa scams?

Pattern What it sounds like Why it is a problem
Fake or "borrowed" bank money "No 800k? We handle the bank part." The money test is met with forged statements, stamps or a short-term deposit that is not yours. Forged documents can lead to refusal and long bans.
Guaranteed visa "100% approval or your money back." No agent controls an embassy or immigration officer. Approval is always at the officer's discretion.
School with no classes "ED visa, no need to attend." Immigration checks attendance at extensions, and some offices test basic Thai. Visas linked to non-attendance can be cancelled.
Lookalike government site A site that copies thaievisa.go.th or the TDAC form and charges a fee Your application may never reach the government. The real TDAC is free.
"Special contact" at immigration "We know an officer, it will be fast." This suggests bribery. You carry the risk if it goes wrong.
Pay everything upfront, in cash No receipt, no company name You have nothing to show if the agent disappears.

Have there been real visa agency raids in Thailand?

Yes. On 17 August 2026, Thai immigration police announced a raid on a visa consultancy in Sai Mai district, Bangkok, carried out under a Min Buri Criminal Court warrant. Khaosod English, The Thaiger and The Pattaya News reported that officers seized forged bank and government stamps, more than 20 suspected fake financial documents and four computers. Reports put the clients involved at more than 400.

Note the scope. That case concerned Thai nationals applying for visas to a European country, after an embassy flagged suspicious bank statements. It was not about Thai visas for foreigners. It still shows how forged bank documents are made and how embassies spot them.

Thai authorities have also warned about fake TDAC websites that charge for the free arrival card. In October 2025 Khaosod English reported the Ministry of Tourism and Sports saying any site that collects money for TDAC registration is not official.

What are the official Thai visa websites?

Thai government sites use the .go.th domain. Type the address yourself rather than clicking ads.

Task Official site
Apply for a visa abroad thaievisa.go.th
Arrival card (TDAC) tdac.immigration.go.th
90-day report online tm47.immigration.go.th
TM30 residence notice tm30.immigration.go.th
Immigration Bureau immigration.go.th
Ministry of Foreign Affairs mfa.go.th
LTR visa ltr.boi.go.th

A known lookalike is thaievisa.org, which reviewers describe as a private agency, not the government. A site ending in .com, .org or .net, or with extra words such as "official" or "apply", is not a Thai government site. Thailand Privilege is sold by its operator at thailandprivilege.co.th and by its authorised agents.

How do I check a visa agent or school in Thailand?

  1. Get the legal name. Ask for the company name and registration number. Look it up with the Department of Business Development (dbd.go.th).
  2. For schools, check the licence. Private language schools are licensed by the Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC) under the Ministry of Education. Ask for the licence number and check it.
  3. Visit the address. A real office or school has a real front door. A WhatsApp number alone is not enough.
  4. Ask what they will submit. Every document should be yours and genuine. If they offer to "provide" any financial document, walk away.
  5. Ask about attendance. A genuine school has a timetable, class records and a teacher. If it says you do not need to come, it is selling risk.
  6. Get a written quote and receipt. It should split government fees from service fees.
  7. Check the rule yourself. Compare what they say with the official values on our visa rules pages.

If you have already paid a lookalike site, submit a real application on the official site and contact your card issuer about the charge. Report fake sites to the cyber police on 1441.

What does Staylong Verified mean?

It means we checked four things before giving the status:

  • Licence: the provider matches its Ministry of Education or Department of Business Development registration.
  • Address: the premises exist and operate at the listed address.
  • Visa support: the provider can issue the documents the visa needs.
  • Prices: we recorded published prices in THB and the date we saw them.

We re-check at least every six months and after any complaint. Verification cannot be bought. Partner is a separate commercial label, shown only while a provider stays Verified.

It does not mean we guarantee your visa, vouch for every staff member, or check each document a provider gives you. Only an embassy or immigration officer decides your application. Read the full method on how we verify, or browse verified providers.

Questions people ask

Can an agent get me a retirement visa without 800,000 baht?

Not legally, unless you meet the income route of 65,000 THB a month or the combination route. Offers that skip the money test usually rely on borrowed funds or forged documents. Your visa and your record carry the risk.

Is a visa agent that guarantees approval a scam?

It is a red flag. Approval is always at the discretion of the embassy or immigration officer, so no agent can guarantee it. A refund promise does not undo a refusal on your record.

How do I know if a Thai language school is real?

Ask for its licence from the Office of the Private Education Commission, check its address, and ask for a class timetable. A school that says you do not need to attend is not offering a real course.

Is thaievisa.org the official Thai e-Visa site?

No. The official e-Visa portal is thaievisa.go.th, run for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Thai government sites end in .go.th.

What should I do if a visa agent scammed me?

Keep every message, receipt and document. Report fraud to the Thai police or the cyber police hotline 1441, and contact your bank or card issuer. If a forged document went into an application, get independent legal advice quickly.
